Stair Rugs for Wooden Steps
In January 2026, Nikolette tore her CCL (the same injury as a human ACL) while we were out for a nice walk on our nature trail. After my husband did a serious amount of research and we exhausted ourselves talking through our concerns, we opted to postpone surgery. Instead, we decided to give her time to see how well she recovered with medications from the vet, red light therapy, supplements, restricted movement, and lots of rest.
Eight months later, Nikolette has recovered very well without surgery. Of course, we still have some movement restrictions in place to avoid reinjury or injury to her other knee, and she'll be on supplements long-term. She's eight years old, so she's slowing down a bit anyway. She gets to take Cosequin and turmeric daily, and we've learned she much prefers the duck-flavored turmeric over the bacon. (It took some serious coaxing to get her to finish that bacon-flavored supply!)
Stairs have been a big hurdle in this recovery process. We live in a two-story house, and for eight months, I gladly carried her up and down the steps. I'd still be doing it if my husband hadn't pointed out that she needs to start using the stairs on her own. The concern, though, is that our stairs are hardwood and curved. She's always navigated them well, but with this knee injury, I've been terrified she'd take a spill and get hurt.
We agreed to let her use the stairs one to two times a day, and that's when we got to wishing we had a carpet runner. We started brainstorming solutions, and I began shopping on Amazon to see what was out there. There are tons of stair rugs to choose from.
We ended up purchasing the Indoor Stair Treads by YDKGL, made specifically for wooden stairs. They have a rubber backing that keeps them from slipping, which is exactly what we needed for Nikolette. I love that they're residue-free and easy to pick up off the stairs anytime we want. They've been just as easy to clean as advertised — they can be vacuumed or even washed with room-temperature water and mild detergent. Of course, I chose the ones with the adorable pawprints in brown to match our hardwood, but they come in other colors and patterns too.
The stair rugs measure 8" x 30". They may look a little different in the photos because our stairs are curved and custom-made, so the rugs don't sit quite as uniformly as they would on standard straight steps. We think they look great and couldn't be happier with our purchase.
It took Nikolette a few days to get used to the stair rugs. At first, she needed a lot of patience and coaxing to go down the stairs — that's just her, though. She always takes a little extra time to adjust to anything new. Now she's going up and down with ease and confidence, and I'm so glad we found a product that looks great and keeps her safe on the stairs.
