A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins

Paula Hawkins knows how to deliver a good, suspenseful thriller. In A Slow Fire Burning, Daniel is found on his boat by his neighbor, Miriam, murdered. His aunt, Carla, is already suffering through the recent unexpected loss of her sister, also Daniel’s mother. Laura, is the woman Daniel had a one night stand with and was seen leaving Daniel’s boat. This book is really about these three women and their individual tragedies. Obviously, each of them knew Daniel differently and yet they are connected.

It took me awhile to get each of the characters straight in my head and once I did, I was sucked into the story. The advantage of having a lot of characters in a book is that there are a lot of secrets to uncover. This provides a lot of depth, mystery, and intrigue for me. I kept thinking the story was coming to a close and Hawkins would throw in another unexpected twist. She also incorporated aspects of the story, I initially thought were minor, into the conclusion of the book. I found this to be very clever and witty.

I love my signed copy of A Slow Fire Burning that I picked up in a bookstore…anywhere USA. I can’t for the life of me remember where I purchased this book. There’s a helpful map included that aided me in understanding where each of the characters lived.
