Horrorstor (by Grady Hendrix)

Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix is a perfect selection for the Halloween season. The story takes place in a furniture store similar to IKEA, even though it was made very clear at the beginning of the book that it’s not based on an IKEA store. 😂 Since my husband and I visited an IKEA store for the first time earlier this year, I thought I would have the foundation necessary to help me understand the setting for this story. Turned out I was right. It was very helpful as I kept imagining the store we visited.

I thought the beginning of the story was kind of a slow start. In hindsight, I think I was eager to jump right into a scary story by encountering symptoms of a ghostly presence. When the spooky encounters picked up, the pace of the story REALLY picked up! My expectations were met with paranormal activity. I liked the all of the characters and appreciated their role in the story.

Based on the cover and other readers’ comments about the comparison to an IKEA store, I thought this was going to be a goofy book. I couldn’t have been more wrong. There is serious character development. For example, the main character, exhibited a lot of personal growth during the group’s one night stake out. There were also some very funny, LOL moments too. Overall, it was a seriously good, haunted furniture store story. It was all the things I hoped for: spooky, scary, and intense. I really liked the ending. Is there a sequel I don’t know about?

I borrowed the audiobook version from my local library with the Libby app. Narration by Tai Simmons and Bronson Pinchot was great!
