Strange Highways (by Dean Koontz)
Strange Highways by Dean Koontz is a much more complex story than I anticipated by reading the description. Joey, an alcoholic, returns home for his father’s funeral. His mother died years ago. His older brother’s location is unknown; therefore, he’s completely unaware their father has died. In an urgency to leave his hometown, Joey is faced with an unexpected option; he can choose the road that will take him back to his sad, drunken lifestyle or he can chose the road that unknowingly just may provide him with an opportunity to return to 1975 where he can challenge his past choices.
Well, it’s no surprise that Joey chooses the road with all of the chaos, suspense, and horror. If he chose the other road, we wouldn’t have a book to read, now would we? Joey’s trip to 1975 is intense! Koontz definitely entertained me with this story. The structure of the story regarding the timeline was unique. I like how the story started with Joey’s present day and jumped back to 1975. As the story evolved, I experienced moments of confusion as though Koontz was deliberately manipulating my mind. I completely welcome and embrace stories that keep me guessing and Strange Highways certainly delivered!
