The Wrong One (by Dervla McTiernan)
I’ve enjoyed Dervla McTiernan’s books and novellas, so I was pleased to find this novella, The Wrong One, included in my Audible membership. The story revolves around Clara Coleman, who is arrested for murder. Her teenage son, Sébastien, urgently contacts Simon Miller, an estranged family friend and former police detective who once worked closely with Clara’s late husband. Simon rushes to help prove Clara’s innocence, but as he delves deeper into the case, long-buried secrets are uncovered and complicated loyalties that lead to shocking revelations about who the “wrong one” truly is.
McTiernan weaves a unique tale about a woman wrongfully accused of murder. The unexpected twists and turns make for an enjoyable mystery. However, I found the narrations by Neil Hellegers and Michael Crouch to be less than satisfactory. I listened to the book at 1.2 speed, which made the voices even less appealing. Both narrators struggled to convey the nuances of women’s characters. Fortunately, the novella is relatively short, and the voices were tolerable for that duration.
