Josh Malerman

Josh Malerman put on the most unique event for the book tour for Bird Box that I’ve ever attended! I had not yet read Bird Box when I decided to go to this author event. I was intrigued by the book when I saw it advertised that Malerman was coming to Joseph-Beth booksellers in Lexington, Kentucky.

As we took our seats, the “stage” area was prepped for a musical performance instead of a traditional author talk. As Malerman, his wife, and a keyboard player took their positions, Malerman provided the audience with blindfolds and asked us to wear them during their performance. Malerman didn’t simply read from his debut novel, the trio PERFORMED a portion of the story! Since Malorie and others in the story had to be blindfolded to increase their chances of survival, it made for a fascinating experience to be blindfolded like a character in the book.

During the signing portion of the evening, Malerman was approachable and easy to talk with. He personalized my copy of Bird Box and wrote “I hope this freaks you out! That was a blast.” As Malerman has grown as a writer and become incredibly popular, I cherish this experience as he hasn’t returned to Lexington with his subsequent books.
