Boca Raton (by Lauren Groff)

An Amazon Original short story about a woman, Ange, finding something disturbing while performing a clean up at the beach in Boca Raton, Florida. She then struggles with insomnia which impacts her job and taking care of her daughter. Ange spirals into paranoia as reads about predicted changes in the earth and how that may impact Florida and consequently her daughter’s future. I usually love Groff’s writing, but this story didn’t do much for me. For starters, I didn’t think the item Ange found was all that significant to have led to so much turmoil in her life. I appreciate how insomnia can cause distorted thinking so I get how it affected her paranoia. It just seemed like a rushed story with some gaps that maybe could have been explored more; therefore, giving it potential as a longer story.
