Broken (by Don Winslow)

When it comes to reading a book written by Don Winslow, I first have to decide if I’m going to read a physical copy or if I’m going with the audio version. Exactly how do I decide? It’s simple. If Ray Porter is the narrator, then my decision is made. I can’t find the words to describe how perfect his voice is for the stories about the serious bad guys…seriously bad like the cartel.

Broken, is a collection of six short novels. Some of the stories are narrated by Ray Porter, and some are narrated by Kaleo Griffith. I usually have a hard time with short story collections. I seldom like all of the stories and am left wanting there to be more. This may be the first time I left a rating of five stars for a collection of short stories. Broken, is THAT GOOD!

There’s a story about a family employed in law enforcement; dedicated to upholding the law and rounding bad guys. Until the job becomes personal. Lines get blurred and people are literally broken. In another story, the reader follows the life of jewel thief and a detective with an unpopular opinion as to the thief’s identity. There’s a humorous story about a monkey and a gun.

I enjoyed the overlap of characters in some of the stories. A very minor character in one story becomes the main character in the next. Winslow also incorporates characters from his previous novels; Boone Daniels and the dawn patrol, Neal Carey, and Bobby Z.

Listening to Broken was an incredible reading experience. I absolutely loved this collection. I’m heartbroken Don Winslow is retiring from writing fiction and grateful I have not yet read all of his books. Thankfully, my reading journey with Winslow is not yet over.
