Buckeye (by Patrick Ryan)

Buckeye by Patrick Ryan is one of those rare novels that seems to quietly captivate everyone who picks it up. Its beautiful cover has been calling to me from bookstore displays, newsletters, and social media feeds for months. I waited patiently for the audiobook to become available through my library’s Libby app—and it was absolutely worth every minute of the wait.

This intimate historical novel follows the intertwined lives of two couples in the fictional small town of Bonhomie, Ohio, stretching from World War II through the late 20th century. With richly drawn characters—a man kept from military service, his wife gifted with a unique spiritual sensitivity, and another couple carrying their own secrets and heartaches—the story explores love, loyalty, sacrifice, longing, and the way personal choices echo through decades of ordinary Midwestern life. It’s a deeply compassionate portrait of community, forgiveness, family, and the quiet complexities of small-town America.

As someone who grew up in Ohio, I found myself completely immersed in the nostalgia of familiar places and cultural nuances. I loved every character and felt privileged to witness their lives unfold. The final hours of the audiobook hit with surprising emotional weight, leaving me teary-eyed and reflective. I looked forward to every chance I could listen—whether folding laundry, running errands, or tackling yard work. There’s something special about a book so good that even manual labor feels like a treat because it means more time with the story.

Michael Crouch’s narration is outstanding. He brings each character to life with warmth, authenticity, and perfect small-town cadence, making the listening experience truly immersive.

Buckeye is a beautifully written, emotionally resonant novel that lingers with you long after the final page. If you’re looking for a heartfelt, character-driven story with depth and humanity, this one deserves a spot on your TBR. Highly recommended—especially on audio.
