Christmas Presents (by Lisa Unger)

Christmas Presents by Lisa Unger is an excellent holiday-themed thriller! This well crafted story introduces readers to Lolly, a young woman who is trying to sort out what she wants from life. Just when she thinks she has decided on her next step, Lolly goes missing.

Madeline Martin owns a successful bookstore, appropriately named The Next Chapter. Madeline lived through a traumatic experience when she was a teenager. True crime podcaster, Harley Granger, enters Madeline’s life looking to stir up those disturbing events in which her best friend was murdered and two sisters went missing. Evan Handy was convicted of the murder, but Harley has curiosities he wants satisfied. Despite Evan Handy’s incarceration, more women have gone missing.

At roughly five and a half hours of listening time, Christmas Presents is packed with suspense and layers of one woman’s life. I loved how the pieces kept falling together while leaving me with more questions and suspicions. The story is intense and frightening at times, while filled with hope, forgiveness, and love that are staples of the holiday season.

I borrowed the audiobook from my local library with the Libby app. Narration by Jennifer Pickens was perfect.
