Eggnog, Extortion, & Evergreens (by Tonya Kappes)
Eggnog, Extortion, and Evergreens by Tonya Kappes is book 14 of the Camper and Criminals Mystery series. This cozy mystery series is set in fictional Normal, Kentucky with main character, Mae West, running the local campground. The small town is getting ready for the Winter Festival. Mae has a car accident due to a recent snowfall on the curvy, rural roads that puts her in a coma.
While Mae is in the hospital, the man in the bed next to her in the emergency room doesn’t survive. When Mae wakes up from her coma, she has a concussion and starts having memories of a past childhood trauma and conversations of a murder plot for the man in the emergency room. Mae’s boyfriend is Hank Sharp, a local sheriff’s detective, who begins working the case of the suspicious death. Mae belongs to a group of women in the small town who calls themselves the Laundry Club Ladies. The group also begins working the suspicious death, despite Mae’s concussion and Hank’s repeated warnings to let him do his job.
This book is a cute cozy mystery with a holiday theme I enjoyed. I have only read one other book in the series, also with a Christmas theme. The characters are likable and the mystery is satisfying. There’s a lot of humor with a serious plot twist. I was surprised by the ending and how the Laundry Club Ladies solved the murder. It’s nice that this series can be read out of order. I think if I started from the beginning, I would have a better grasp on Mae West’s past and how she ended up in Normal, Kentucky. This book also made me hungry with the descriptions of the delicious sweets served in town and at the Winter Festival. 😋
I borrowed the audiobook from my local library with the Libby app. Narration by Johanna Parker was enjoyable.
