Fractured (by Karin Slaughter)
Karin Slaughter is a solid writer of mystery and suspense. I read her Grant County series, a couple of her stand alone novels, and am working my way through her Will Trent series. I have loved every book so far and know that I can rely on her intelligent story telling for an excellent read.
Fractured, is the second installment of the Will Trent series. A mom comes home to find her daughter brutally murdered and the killer is still standing over her body. The mom fights for her own life and out of the rage she feels for what has been done to her daughter. Will Trent and his boss, Amanda, arrive on scene hoping to take the case away from the Atlanta Police Department, if it proves to be better suited for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. As the investigation proceeds, nothing about this case is at it seems at first glance.
Despite Will Trent’s character flaws, he’s definitely become a character I like. He’s committed to solving crimes and putting away the perpetrators. He doesn’t work well with others and is deeply traumatized by his childhood growing up in an orphanage. He’s incredibly sophisticated, in a rough around the edges kind of way, when it comes to working a case. I feel sorry for Will’s decision making in the relationship department. He deserves better than his fiancee, Angie; she such a train wreck. It’s obvious their relationship isn’t going to last. He’s committed to his adorable dog.
Kathleen Early does a great job narrating the audiobook version I borrowed from my local library through Overdrive/Libby. I devoured this book! It was SO GOOD; I listened to it every chance I had!!
