How It Ends (by Rachel Howzell Hall)
Rachel Howzell Hall’s novella, How It Ends, is a thrilling mystery and suspense story. Marti is in the process of divorcing her husband, Emery, of 10 years. She moves into a new home in Los Angeles, excited for a fresh start when she discovers some of her most cherished possessions are missing from the boxes she is unpacking. Just a few days later, she’s brutally attacked in her own home. Fortunately, her new neighbors promptly come to her aid. Despite the fact that she never laid eyes on her attacker, Marti is determined to assist the police in their pursuit of the perpetrator. She’s going through a lot of trauma and is struggling to get her life back on track while the investigation continues.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. Marti is a likeable character, particularly as she is striving to reclaim her independence and enjoyment in foods and activities she gradually relinquished during her marriage to Emery. She also possesses a dark side that pleasantly surprised me. The story incorporates several unexpected and ingenious twists.
I acquired the audiobook, which is only available on Audible with my membership. Joniece Abbott-Pratt does a great job narrating.
I recently met Rachel during The Back Room, a virtual author event, in which she was discussing her latest book, The Last One. Linked below is the blog post I wrote about my experience with that event.
