I Am Mine - Words + Music (by Eddie Vedder)

Back in 1991, Pearl Jam was evolving as a popular grunge rock band based out of Seattle. I was a fan of their songs and often listened to their debut album, Ten. I also enjoyed their second album, Vitology. When I discovered that lead singer Eddie Vedder narrated and performed an audiobook, I Am Mine, for the Words + Music series as an Audible Original, I added it to my library. I’m fascinated by learning about people, and I have fond memories of listening to Pearl Jam in the 1990s.

Vedder begins the audiobook with an entertaining anecdote about his journey into the music industry. I admire his dedication to performing tasks for musicians in small music auditoriums without compensation. Through these experiences, he honed his musical skills by observing the intricate workings of shows behind the scenes and learning from the wisdom of the artists. He expresses his gratitude to his musician mentors.

Vedder shared the shock and awe he and Pearl Jam felt when they achieved fame. It was intriguing to learn that he coped with fame by living a rather secluded lifestyle. He rarely left his home and spent most of his time alone. Vedder’s humility was evident when he spoke about being able to purchase a house, a feat he never imagined possible. I miss the days when artists pursued music solely for the joy of it, without the pursuit of fame and fortune.

It was fascinating to delve into Eddie Vedder’s music career. He discussed Nirvana, the tragic incident that occurred at their concert in Denmark, and his solo album and soundtrack for the movie Into the Wild. Vedder is a private individual and refrained from revealing any details about his wife and children. I particularly enjoyed the acoustic performances interspersed throughout the audiobook.

I Am Mine is episode #24 of the Words + Music series by Audible. Currently, there are 41 artists highlighted in the growing series. Each artist’s story, narrated by the artist themselves, is approximately 90 minutes long and offers insightful and enjoyable content. I’ve also written reviews for other artists I’ve listened to. Check them out below.
