Immersive Van Gogh ~ Columbus, Ohio

Here we come, again!

This is our second time seeing the Immersive Van Gogh in Columbus, Ohio at Lighthouse ArtSpace. We first saw it in November 2021 and completely fell in love with the experience. We watched it twice and I left wishing we would have stayed for a third round. The images and music flow together perfectly. It’s a top notch performance that honors Vincent’s work beautifully.

We needed to make another trip to Columbus and the universe rewarded me with an email that the show had been extended and tickets were on sale. Perfect timing! This time we stayed for three rounds of the show to again completely absorb ourselves in the music and images of sunflowers, starry nights, irises, self portraits, and Vincent’s room. The building was decorated with painting tools, quotes on the walls, and information about Vincent. The gift shop offered a variety of high-end keepsakes of tea cups, posters, books, pillows, tote bags, magnets….just about anything you can think of.

During our first visit, we purchased the book ‘Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit’ as a nice reminder of our meaningful experience. I fell in love with the book, Vincent Van Gogh: The Complete Paintings. It’s a HUGE book of all of his work!

My favorite painter? That would be Vincent!

Vincent is one of my favorite artists. I own a lot of books about him and his paintings. The book that truly does his life story justice is Van Gogh: The Life by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith. It’s a door stopper and worth reading every word. I was so impressed by all of the details and efforts the authors put into this project. The book offers an interesting scenario about the end of Vincent’s life. One that is not due to suicide. I very much prefer and buy into the authors’ version.

Steven Naifeh recently published another book about Vincent titled, Van Gogh and the Artists He Loved. I received it as a Christmas gift, but I haven’t read it yet. I know, what am I waiting for?!

My favorite book about his paintings is titled Van Gogh In Provence and Auvers by Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov. This book has my absolute favorite cover too. I have it displayed quite intentionally in my library.

Willem Van Gogh or Vincent Dafoe?

At Eternity’s Gate, is an excellent movie about Vincent’s time in Auvers. Actor, Willem Dafoe, does a perfect job playing Vincent. His time in Auvers is really special to me. He lived with Paul Gauguin and painted many of his masterpieces. The movie also portrays the most likely scenario that ended poor Vincent’s life. This movie tugs at my heart strings every time I watch it. It’s an amazing experience that touches on so many emotions.

One last thing…

I’ve mentioned in a previous blog post about my husband, the artist, that you can read about here. His favorite artist is Van Gogh. He admires Vincent’s art and his way of thinking. He respects and relates to so many of Van Gogh’s perspectives about creating and selling art. In my husband’s art studio are a couple of Van Gogh collectibles for inspiration; a Funko Pop and Little Thinkers doll.

Part of my collection…
