In Bloom (by Paul Tremblay)

There are advantages to reading short stories. For me, short stories are a challenge to enjoy. I’ve analyzed my struggle and concluded that’s because most of them are too short. That seems to be the common thread of the short stories I have completed and didn’t really enjoy.

For instance, with Paul Tremblay’s short story, In Bloom, I was completely sucked into the beginning of the story about the boy and his dad attending a local baseball game. That portion of the story was great! As the story moved onto Heidi who is investigating recurring toxic algae blooms, it started to fall flat for me. The ending was abrupt, which leads me back to my struggle with short stories. I wish there was about one or two more hours to the audiobook, just to expand the story a bit more.

I’ll keep trying short stories; always in hope to read a gem!

In Bloom is part of the Creature Feature collection from Amazon. I listened to the audiobook for free on Audible with my Amazon Prime membership. The audiobook is available “Only From Audible.”  Narrators A.T. Chandler and Dara Rosenberg did a wonderful job!

I also listened to the following stories that are part of the Creature Feature collection. My reviews are linked below.

Ankle Snatcher by Grady Hendrix

It Waits in the Woods by Josh Malerman

The Pram by Joe Hill

You’re welcome to check out my review for another book by Paul Tremblay linked below.
