It Waits in the Woods (by Josh Malerman)

Josh Malerman delivers fear and terror with this short story, It Waits in the Woods. There’s a legend that a creature lives deep in the Michigan forest. An adventurer will know they have found the creature when they discover an old bridge with faded white paint and intricate handrails with aged yellow trim. This creature is missing something and searches for it in the unlucky adventurers who cross its path.

When Brenda was 15 years old, her sister disappeared in the woods. This tragic loss and how the parents cope is heartbreaking. Three years later, Brenda re-enters those woods, alone, to search for her missing sister. The hiking and camping portions of this story are creepy, but what Brenda encounters in the woods is terrifying. Narration by Lauren Ezzo was excellent! She wonderfully brought the woods and creature to life.

It Waits in the Woods is part of the Creature Feature collection from Amazon. I listened to the audiobook for free on Audible with my Amazon Prime membership. The audiobook is available “Only From Audible.”

I also listened to The Pram by Joe Hill, which is part of the Creature Feature collection. My review is linked below.
