Malorie (by Josh Malerman)
At the conclusion of Bird Box, which I read a few years ago, I was left wondering what happened next to Malorie and her children. Admittedly, I often finish stories feeling curious about what happened next to the characters. So, when Josh Malerman wrote Malorie, where he tells the story of what happened next, I was super excited.
This book meets up with Malorie and her children, 12 years after Bird Box. The story is immediately intense and suspenseful. Malorie is the center of this book. Readers learn how she has managed to survive all of these years in the new world. Scary and horrific events continue to take place as Malorie continues to face new challenges and is forced to take risks.
Just as Malorie’s paranoia started to wear on my patience, and I began to align with her children, I was reminded why her methods are so important to their survival. I like how Malerman concluded this chapter of Malorie’s life. He provided an emotional ending, once again leaving me wonder, what’s next?
The acknowledgements Malerman wrote were quite interesting. He not only thanked all of the people important to his writing, publication, and movie adaptation production, he shared about the development of Bird Box and Malorie. I appreciate it when authors share the behind the scenes development of their work with readers.
BTW, I love my signed copy of Malorie, that was gifted to me by my husband for Christmas a couple of years ago.
