Marilyn Monroe: The Biography (By Donald Spoto)
I previously read My Story by Marilyn Monroe, her unfinished autobiography that covers her life up through her honeymoon with Joe DiMaggio. Eager for a fuller picture, I turned to Marilyn Monroe: The Biography by Donald Spoto—and it delivered exactly what I was looking for.
Meticulously researched, the book draws on more than 150 interviews and 35,000 pages of previously sealed documents, including diaries, letters, and personal papers. Spoto offers a comprehensive account of Monroe’s life: her difficult childhood and adolescence, her marriages and relationships, her rise to stardom, and the circumstances of her death. He also challenges several persistent myths, particularly those linking her closely with the Kennedys. Published in 1993, it remains one of the most thoroughly documented biographies of Monroe.
The book is well organized, engaging, and genuinely illuminating. It was a pleasure to learn about Marilyn’s upbringing, career, and marriages. I grew up knowing her as a gorgeous icon, but I knew little about the woman behind the image. Her death had always seemed mysterious to me. This biography gave me a fascinating and grounded look into both her private and professional life.
I especially appreciated Spoto’s careful, evidence-based treatment of her death. He presents the facts clearly, addresses how various rumors and theories took hold, and effectively dispels much of the conjecture that has surrounded the case for decades. I was shocked by what I learned and troubled that no one was held accountable. Reading about Joe DiMaggio’s reaction to her passing was particularly heartbreaking.
I enjoyed listening to the audiobook narrated by Anna Fields on Audible. Her performance perfectly complemented the material.
I’m now eager to read Marilyn and Her Books: The Literary Life of Marilyn Monroe by Gail Crowther. I loved discovering how passionate a reader and lifelong seeker of knowledge Marilyn was.
