No One Will Know (by Rose Carlyle)

In September 2024, I attended my first Back Room author event, where Rose Carlyle shared insights into her latest novel, No One Will Know. An Australian author with a deep passion for sailing, Rose’s book piqued my interest, leading me to add it to my wish list. Fortunately, my local library recently made it available on Libby, and I finally had the opportunity to listen to it.

Set on a remote Australian island, No One Will Know follows Eve Sylvester, a young woman pregnant and without family or friends. She finds herself hired as a nanny by the wealthy Julia and Christopher Hygate, who reside in a mansion on the island. Initially thrilled with the opportunity, Eve soon begins to harbor suspicions about the true nature of her employment.

This book’s cover is simply gorgeous! The setting of a remote island with a mansion, lighthouse, and sailing boats is lovely. The sailing portions of the story were interesting because I know very little about sailing, but Rose’s expertise shines through. The narrative is filled with unexpected twists, making it difficult to predict the ending. The book is well-written with engaging and suspenseful scenes.

I’m not a fan of naïve and gullible characters. In this case, Eve didn’t have the chance to test her strength and perseverance before being drawn into an absurd offer. I can understand her being young and lacking support or guidance. I do perceive her as redeeming herself as the story progressed. I didn’t connect with any of the characters, and I didn’t find them likable. Overall, I enjoyed No One Will Know, but I didn’t love it.

As I had mentioned earlier, I borrowed the audiobook of No One Will Know from my local library using the Libby app. The narration by Siho Ellsmore was exceptionally good.
