The Alchemist (by Paulo Coelho)

As our niece prepares to graduate high school and step into the exciting, uncertain world of college, we wanted to give her a meaningful book—one that would inspire independence, encourage her to chase life’s opportunities, and remind her to stay true to herself rather than bend to others’ expectations. After some searching, I chose The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Having heard so much praise for it, I decided to read it myself first.

The Alchemist is a timeless fable that follows Santiago, a young Andalusian shepherd, as he leaves the comfort of his familiar life to pursue a recurring dream about hidden treasure. What starts as a quest for riches becomes a profound journey of self-discovery, courage, and the pursuit of one’s “Personal Legend.”

Written in a gentle, almost poetic style, Coelho’s story beautifully explores themes of destiny, intuition, perseverance, and the mysterious ways the universe supports those brave enough to follow their hearts. Deceptively simple yet deeply wise, the novel reminds us that real fulfillment rarely comes from playing it safe or conforming. It comes from listening to our inner voice and daring to embrace the unknown.

I loved this short, fable-like novel. Its messages feel exactly right for our niece as she stands on the threshold of a new life chapter—full of possibility and promise.

I listened to the audiobook version borrowed from my local library via Hoopla, and Jeremy Irons delivers a truly outstanding narration that brings the story to life.
