The Chateau (by Avery Bishop)
I’m incredibly grateful for my Audible membership. Besides the credits that come with it, there are always a plethora of fantastic books included for free. Recently, I noticed that the book ‘The Chateau’ by Avery Bishop was part of the selection. The book cover piqued my interest, and I read the description before immediately adding it to my library. It was also placed prominently on my reading list.
Nina and Michael Carr, newlyweds, seek solace at the luxurious Chateau resort in the Catskill Mountains, escaping their hectic lives amidst breathtaking views and opulent tranquility. However, their romantic “minimoon” takes a dramatic turn when the body of a young woman is discovered near the lake, plunging Nina into a harrowing homicide investigation. Detectives zero in on her as a potential key witness—or suspect.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The elegant setting of the chateau, the serene lake, and the surrounding hiking trails created a captivating atmosphere. It reminded me of our recent trip to the West Baden Springs hotel in French Lick, Indiana. (I shared our adventure on my Adventure blog post, which you can find here.) The murder mystery was intriguing and had an unexpected conclusion. I appreciated how the story expanded to include the narrative of one of the detectives, providing a fresh perspective beyond the protagonist, Nina.
Christine Lakin’s narration brought the story to life with remarkable skill. I’m also delighted to have discovered a new author.
