The Cuckoo’s Cry (by Caroline Overington)
Another Audible Original! I enjoyed The Cuckoo’s Cry by Caroline Overington. Set in Australia at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, Don Barlow lives in an idyllic beachside cottage. Now widowed, Don’s daily routine is fairly…routine. That is, until a young woman knocks on his door, tells him they are related, and she has nowhere to go. He allows her to enter his home, which also opens the door for a unique story to unfold. The COVID lockdown is imposed. While Don’s adult daughter is very suspicious of this woman and her intentions, Don allows her to stay. There is definitely something wrong with this situation.
This is my first time reading anything by Caroline Overington, so I didn’t know what to expect when I started this book. I was pleasantly surprised by the development of this story line. I liked the characters, the beach town seemed lovely, and the suspenseful buildup was great. As the climax neared, I kept going back and forth in my mind as to how the details would unfold. I like that the author kept me on my toes. At just under five hours of listening, narrator Aimee Horne did a great job bringing the story to life. As an Audible Original, the production was excellent.
