The Demon Next Door (by Bryan Burrough)

I acquired this Audible Original through my membership. I enjoy true crime stories, so The Demon Next Door by Bryan Burrough piqued my interest.

Bryan Burrough discovered that he grew up in the same small town, Temple, Texas, as the serial killer, Danny Corwin. Burrough walks the reader through Corwin’s upbringing, to his early deviant behavior of rape back in the 1970’s. He explores not only law enforcement’s lack of effort to address Corwin, but also that of the community. Clearly, any person who is capable of such gruesome behavior, is likely highly manipulative. Although, it’s still the responsibility of the criminal justice system to properly hold people responsible for such violent crimes. Burrough acknowledges the community’s lack of response, including the family’s denial. Burrough interviews law enforcement and citizens involved in the rapes and murders; however, many people are unwilling to talk about it with Corwin.

It’s an interesting case, especially since it barely received media attention at the time. The narration by Steve White was just okay. His voice didn’t quite hit the mark for my ears. Overall, it’s a good listen if you need a short dose of true crime in your reading line up.
