The Keeper (by Tana French)
The Keeper by Tana French is a bittersweet conclusion to the Cal Hooper trilogy. I’d been eagerly awaiting its release and my turn on Libby, knowing it would be hard to say goodbye to Cal, Lena, and Trey.
Set in the remote Irish village of Ardnakelty, the story follows retired Chicago detective Cal Hooper, who has settled into a quieter life with his fiancée, Lena Dunne, and his young woodworking apprentice, Trey. When Rachel Holohan—engaged to the son of the town’s powerful local businessman—is found dead in the river (initially ruled a suicide), long-buried grudges, shifting loyalties, and a secretive land-development scheme rise to the surface, splitting the close-knit community.
As Cal is reluctantly drawn back into investigating, French explores themes of chosen family, the weight of small-town secrets, power dynamics, and the constant tension between justice and the village’s ingrained code of silence.
Tana French is one of my favorite authors—I’ve actually read everything she’s written, which is rare for me. The Cal Hooper series has been an absolute standout. The Keeper is a slow-burn mystery, but its real strength lies in the richly drawn relationships within Ardnakelty. I especially loved watching Cal and Lena’s authentic, grounded romance as they navigate their future with the wisdom of experience. Trey continues to be a highlight; her growth across the trilogy has been deeply satisfying. The novel carries a quiet, pervasive sadness that feels perfectly weighted—poignant without tipping into melodrama.
Roger Clark’s narration is outstanding. He delivers the perfect Irish accent for the setting while handling Cal’s American voice with ease. I couldn’t get enough of it.
