The Missing Half (by Ashley Flowers)
Not long ago, I read Ashley Flowers’ debut novel, All Good People Here. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so I decided to place a library hold on her second book, The Missing Half. Ashley co-wrote the book with Alex Kiester. She’s also known for her role as the host of the Crime Junkie podcast.
In the small town of Mishawaka, Indiana, 24-year-old Nic Monroe is still haunted by the disappearance of her older sister, Kasey, seven years ago. Kasey’s car was found abandoned far from home, and no trace of her was ever found. Nic struggles with guilt, alcohol, a recent DWI, and a dead-end job, and she feels pity from those around her.
When Jenna Connor, the sister of another missing woman named Jules, enters Nic’s life, she offers hope and a chance to team up. The two women embark on an investigation to uncover the fate of their sisters. What unfolds is a gripping tale of sisterhood, buried secrets, grief, addiction, and desperate measures. As they dig deeper, they uncover dark truths that could destroy everything they know.
Initially, I found the story a bit lackluster. I didn’t connect with the characters or feel invested in the plot. It reminded me of a Dateline episode, and while I love Dateline, I just wasn’t enchanted by this book. I seriously considered giving up about 35% into it. However, I decided to persevere in hopes that the story would improve. And it did. The last few hours were particularly interesting, with well-crafted twists and a satisfying ending. Overall, I didn’t enjoy it as much as her first novel.
I borrowed the audiobook of The Missing Half from my local library using Libby. I enjoyed the narration by Saskia Maarleveld.
