The New Husband (by D. J. Palmer)

The New Husband by D. J. Palmer surprised me! Initially, I thought it was another suspenseful story about a woman being manipulated by a new man in her life. New man starts demonstrating creepy, controlling behaviors, and the woman refuses to accept reality despite the people closest to her pointing it out.

As the story escalated, I recognized that I was loving Palmer’s twisty, wicked, and heart pounding story. Palmer created really interesting characters. The story is told from the perspectives of the mom/wife, Nina, and her middle school age daughter, Maggie.

Nina’s husband, Glen, goes missing from his boat. Nina later learns that Glen was keeping significant secrets leading her to believe he is not the man she knew. Less than two years later, Nina meets a new man, Simon. He seems perfect, and they buy a house together. Maggie isn’t a fan of Simon and this creates a lot of tension in the home. Connor, Nina’s son, loves Simon and thinks the world of him. Simon has some grief issues from his past to work through as well.

Palmer devised a unique, psychotic character with Simon. As I neared the end of the story, most of my listening opportunities took place during my commute to work. I hated getting out of my car at work during tense moments of the story. I observed times throughout my work day thinking about the book and looking forward to picking back up with Nina and Simon.

I borrowed the audiobook from my local library via Hoopla. January LaVoy and Rebecca Solar were great narrators.
