Trapdoor (by J.P. Pomare)

I’m delighted by how my Audible membership introduces me to great authors. I listened to my first book by Australian author, J.P. Pomare, “Trapdoor.” It was an excellent locked-room mystery!

Eva awakens in an unlit, locked cellar, her mind reeling to grasp the circumstances of her arrival. To her surprise, she finds herself in the company of four other men, locked in the room with her. A set of stairs leads to a trapdoor in the ceiling, but it’s firmly locked. One of the prisoners possesses a lighter, and the group finds a cryptic message on the wall: “Connect the dots. Repent.” The group is compelled to unravel the threads of their connection and the sinister purpose behind their imprisonment. Police are alerted to the unfolding nightmare when a live streaming video is released on social media.

Trapdoor” exceeded my expectations. Eva, despite her dark secrets, is an extremely likable character. The tension escalates as the prisoners turn on each other, making it difficult to trust anyone. To intensify the situation, the captor gradually releases water into the cellar, threatening to drown the victims. The story climaxed with several twists and turns. The surprising ending left me feeling sad yet appreciative of the deviation from a conventional conclusion.

The audiobook of “Trapdoor” is only available on Audible. The audiobook boasts an exceptional cast of narrators, including Harriet Gordon-Anderson, Blazey Best, Yannick Lawry, Lewis Fitzgerald, and Brodie Masini.
