Yard Work (by David Koepp)

Buried in my Audible library was this short story, Yard Work by David Koepp. Kevin Bacon narrates the tale of 88-year-old Judge Calvert, who’s recently widowed. His wife dying first was completely unexpected and not what the two had planned. To escape the memories of his wife, Judge moves into his cabin on the lake. Despite his age, he’s determined to clean up the landscape around his cabin. Progress is going well until he encounters an invasive vine that is threatening the life of an oak tree he and his wife had planted on their honeymoon.

Judge’s literal fight with the invasive vine gets wild and crazy! There’s plenty of suspense and uncertainty about whether he will defeat the vine. Judge becomes obsessed with the vine, and this draws concern from his family. It was interesting how the story came full circle, and Judge gained insight into his grief process. Kevin Bacon’s narration was outstanding!
