Kentucky Book Festival 2019

Favorite event of the year…

The annual Kentucky Book Festival in 2019 was held at the Kentucky Horse Park, inside the Alltech Arena. It’s hosted by the Kentucky Humanities Council and the books are purchased through the independent bookseller, Joseph-Beth. It’s pretty cool to be able to see the arena where horses are shown. While there aren’t any other events taking place at the same time as the book festival, you can grab some food from the concession stand, sit in the arena, and watch people practicing with their horses. It’s a huge setting and ideal for a book festival. There’s one gigantic room full of authors and their books. The authors are more than willing to talk about their books, sign them, and take pictures. The location has many other rooms available for author talks.

Scott Pelley

This year, we observed Scott Pelley, a correspondent on 60 Minutes, talk about his new book, Truth Worth Telling: A Reporter’s Search for Meaning in the Stories of Our Times.

David Bell & Jessica Strawser

I visited David Bell at his booth and asked him to sign his book, Layover. Jessica Strawser was next to him. While she was signing her book, Forget You Know Me, I noticed a sign she had next to her book, Not That I Could Tell, stating it took place in Yellow Springs, Ohio. As a native of Ohio, I was instantly curious. Jessica explained that Yellow Springs is a small, hippie-ish town with a natural spring the town is named after. That immediately went on my list of places to visit. The more Jessica and I talked, we learned we are both alumni of Ohio University. It was great getting to know her and a perfect way to sum up my book festival experience this year.
