Kentucky Book Festival 2021

The book festival is back!

The annual book festival hosted by the Kentucky Humanities Council is my favorite author event. This year it was held at a local independent bookstore, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, in Lexington. Due to all of the COVID restrictions and shutdowns, the book festival was canceled in 2020, so I was extremely grateful for all of the authors and people behind the scenes for making this event possible. The festival includes tons of authors available for chatting, signing, and purchasing their books. It’s a book lover’s paradise! There are events scheduled throughout the day of author talks.

Sam Quinones

This year, we attended Sam Quinones’ talk about his new book The Least of Us: True Tales of America and Hope in the Time of Fentanyl and Meth. Sam was in conversation with author Michael Patrick F. Smith, which is available for viewing below. Sam was very personable and willing to engage in a conversation with us at his booth prior to the scheduled author talk. I enjoyed his previous book Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic and this gave us a lot to talk about.

David Domine

Another highlight was meeting David Domine. I was introduced to him years ago by reading his book Phantoms of Old Louisville: Ghostly Tales from America’s Most Haunted Neighborhood. Old Louisville is a beautiful neighborhood with really old Victorian mansions. With the history of the these homes and their former owners comes the opportunity for some pretty intriguing ghosts stories. I intended to pick up David’s new book A Dark Room in Glitter Ball City: Murder, Secrets, and Scandal in Old Louisville. It’s a true crime story that took place in 2010. While talking with David about this book, he explained that his previous book Voodoo Days at La Casa Fabulosa: Oddities and Oddballs in an Enchanted Neighborhood, was a prequel to the new true crime book. David lives in one of the amazing homes in Old Louisville and explained that Voodoo Days is really his memoir. Well, that was immediately added to my book haul for the day.
