A Chance Encounter (by J.P. Pomare)

Thanks to my Audible membership, which includes many of J.P. Pomare’s books, I’ve had the pleasure of listening to several of his audiobooks. I was delighted to add A Chance Encounter to my library. It’s a slow-burning psychological thriller about Katie, a flight attendant who strikes up a flirtatious connection with the wealthy and charismatic Richard Sinclair during a flight from Melbourne to New York. What begins as an exciting and almost too-perfect romantic spark quickly leads her to accept a tempting offer: a fresh start as an au pair for his young son at the family’s idyllic villa on the shores of Italy’s Lake Scanno. Richard is married, and he claims to and his wife shared an open marriage.

However, Katie soon senses that something is amiss about this location. She hears locals speak of past drownings, mysterious disappearances, and the unsettling fates of previous women in the household begin to surface, raising questions about Richard’s true intentions and the secrets hidden beneath the villa’s polished facade. As obsession, manipulation, and buried motives come to light, Katie must confront not only the dangers around her but also her own reasons for stepping into this situation.

The storyline started off intriguing. I was captivated by Katie’s job as a flight attendant and curious about her fascination with Mr. Sinclair. The setting of the mansion on the lake in Italy seemed idyllic. But as the story progressed, my interest began to wane. Another character was introduced, and the narrative became confusing as to which character was narrating. The momentum picked up when there was a revelation, but unfortunately, the ending was quite predictable. Overall, it was just okay.

The audiobook of A Chance Encounter is exclusively available on Audible. I enjoyed Maddy MacRae’s narration.

I have reviews on my blog for other J.P. Pomare stories, which you can find linked below.
