Craven Manor (by Darcy Coates)
I’m a huge fan of Amazon’s Prime Reading program. I can borrow up to 10 books at a time and keep them for as long as I want. The selection of ebooks, magazines, and audiobooks changes regularly, but when I add something to my library, it waits patiently for me to get around to reading it. Quite similiar to any local library, except there’s no return date! This is a perfect example - years ago, I borrowed the ebook of Craven Manor by Darcy Coates and it patiently waited on my Kindle until I finally got around to reading it.
I’ve read a few books by Darcy Coates, and I absolutely love her spooky mansion and ghost stories. Craven Manor was different from her other books I’ve read. It had a strong emotional theme that made me care about the characters and what happened to them. Daniel is extremely down on his luck when he finds a note under his door offering him a job as a groundskeeper at an old mansion called Craven Manor. He’s desperate for a job, so he immediately accepts the offer and goes to find the mansion. But guess what? It’s not as abandoned as he thought. It’s actually full of secrets, and he’s determined to uncover them.
From beginning to end, there are plenty of frightening scenes in this story. The creepy setting of Craven Manor was even more eerie when Daniel was working on the landscaping in the middle of the day. I loved it! Daniel is a super likable character who I always wanted to cheer for, even when he made those typical questionable choices. I really enjoyed the ride this book took me on and the ending was perfect.
