Happy Place (by Emily Henry)
I recently read Emily Henry’s book, Book Lovers, and was thoroughly impressed. Despite being a newcomer to romance novels, I instantly became impressed by her writing. Since then, I’ve discovered a few authors I genuinely enjoy. After finishing Book Lovers, I eagerly placed a library hold on Happy Place. I’m glad I didn’t start with this one because I might not have read any more of her books.
In Happy Place, Harriet and Wyn, a couple who’ve been together since college, have broken up months ago but haven’t informed their close-knit group of friends. Forced to spend a final week at their cherished annual vacation spot—a charming cottage in Knott’s Harbor, Maine—they pretend to still be engaged.
Unfortunately, I found myself abandoning Happy Place after listening to the audiobook for two hours. Initially, I felt bored with the narrative. While the premise was acceptable, I found it lacking in any particular compelling elements. Moreover, I didn’t connect with any of the characters. They seemed ordinary, lacking any unique qualities that would draw me in. Additionally, the alternating timelines confused me in this genre. I usually enjoy this writing style in suspenseful thrillers, but it didn’t enhance my interest in the characters. In fact, it made me question why Harriet and Wyn ever got together in the first place. Their initial conversation was more annoying than intriguing.
I had high expectations for Happy Place, so it’s disappointing that it didn’t meet my expectations. The reviews I’ve read suggest that it’s not Emily’s best work. That’s perfectly understandable, and I’ll be happy to try another one of her books. I’ve already put in a library hold for The People We Meet on Vacation.
I borrowed the audiobook of Happy Place from my local library using Libby. Julian Whelan’s narration was absolutely enchanting. She’s one of my favorite narrators.
I’d be delighted if you’d take a look at my review of Book Lovers, which is conveniently linked below. Additionally, I’ve included a link to an author event I attended via Zoom for the release of Happy Place with Emily and Carley Fortune. This event introduced me to these talented writers.
