Listen for the Lie (by Amy Tintera)

Listen for the Lie’ by Amy Tintera has been on my reading wish list for a while, having seen numerous positive reviews and comments about the book. Recently, it was announced as a qualifying book for the Hispanic Heritage collection of the Fall Goodreads Community Challenge, which provided the final push I needed to dive into this intriguing novel.

Listen for the Lie’ is a gripping thriller that follows Lucy, a woman struggling to rebuild her life after being implicated in her best friend’s murder five years ago. Amnesia and public suspicion weigh heavily on her, and she reluctantly returns to her Texas hometown when a true-crime podcast reopens the case. This forces her to confront buried secrets and unravel the truth. The novel skillfully blends suspense, dark humor, and sharp twists, keeping me hooked as Lucy navigates a web of lies and danger.

While I was aware of the basic premise—a woman may have killed her best friend, but she has no memory of that night—I was completely unprepared for the unexpected twists and turns that awaited me. To my surprise, I found this book incredibly hilarious! (I realize that may sound a bit odd, but I find sarcastic humor to be incredibly entertaining.) Lucy and her grandma’s relationship was particularly delightful, with their dynamic being the source of many laughs. Despite my appreciation for dark humor, the story also features a genuinely captivating murder mystery at its core.

This masterfully crafted thriller weaves a suspenseful and darkly humorous storyline with a compelling murder mystery at its heart. The characters are both entertaining and likable, drawing me into their complex world. I borrowed the audiobook of ‘Listen for the Lie’ using Hoopla. The narration by January LaVoy and Will Damron is exceptional. The production of the audiobook is equally impressive, seamlessly incorporating podcast theme music and introductions by the podcast host whenever the narrative shifts to the investigation and interviews, enhancing the immersive experience.
