The Story She Left Behind (by Patti Callahan Henry)

Author Patti Callahan Henry has been on my reading list for years. When I discovered her latest book, ‘The Story She Left Behind,’ was available on Libby, I immediately placed a hold for the audiobook. I’m always on the lookout for captivating historical fiction books.

The Story She Left Behind’ is a mesmerizing tale inspired by a true literary mystery. It follows Clara, whose childhood is shattered when her renowned author mother, Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham, mysteriously vanishes without a trace. As Clara matures, she embarks on a poignant journey to unravel the truth behind her mother’s disappearance. The novel explores profound themes such as family legacy, identity, the impact of loss, and the enduring power of stories that connect generations. Ultimately, it emerges as a heartfelt love story that delves into the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter.

Historical fiction novels are always rich with fascinating historical accounts. They offer a great way for me to learn about history, especially since I’m less inclined to read nonfiction books about specific historical events. Such as The Great Smog of London in 1952, that is highlighted in this story. I particularly enjoyed how the timeline remained in the present of 1952. Many historical fiction novels alternate between different time periods, which I also enjoy. However, it’s refreshing to experience a historical story that primarily takes place in one time period.

I thoroughly enjoyed this engrossing story, particularly the well-developed characters and the picturesque settings of both a charming coastal South Carolina town and a secluded countryside estate in England. From the very first few minutes of listening to this audiobook, I was certain that I would fall in love with it. Henry is an exceptionally gifted storyteller, and I eagerly anticipate reading her backlist titles.

The audiobook narration by Julia Whelan and Theo Solomon was exceptional. At the end of the audiobook, Henry shares a brief glimpse into the inspiration behind the novel, mentioning the real-life author who disappeared.
