The Broken King (by Brian Panowich)

This story of the Burroughs family was unexpected and yet shed light on the history of McFalls County, Georgia. The short story, The Broken King by Brian Panowich, is part of the Bull Mountain series. It comes before the novels Bull Mountain and Like Lions that immerse the reader into the dark, twisted family dynamics of the Burroughs; criminal outlaws mostly, with the exception of one who chose to uphold the law.

I have come upon this short story after I read Panowich’s other books that take place in rural areas of Georgia. The fact that I read this one of out order didn’t bother me at all. I believe it was intended to be read after Bull Mountain and before Like Lions. I enjoyed a step back into the Burroughs clan, even for a brief moment. When the story finished, it was a perfect ending that flooded me with memories of the other two stories. Well done!

I borrowed The Broken King from my local library through the Hoopla app. Brian Troxell is an excellent narrator for the mood of this story.
