The Sisters by Dervla McTiernan

The Sisters by Dervla McTiernan is a short story prequel to the Ruin. I haven’t yet read The Ruin, but it’s in my overflowing Audible library. The Sisters is set in Ireland where two sisters are beginning their careers in the criminal justice system. Aifric is a new defense attorney and willing to work hard to establish herself in this field. She is granted an opportunity to defend a young man accused of killing his girlfriend. The couple had a public argument in a pub and leave separately. The girlfriend never makes it home.

Carrie, is new to the local police department as a patrol officer. She is vying for an opportunity to become a detective. Aifric and Carrie live together, which is ripe for typical sibling conflicts. Carrie is driven to be an investigator and can’t pass an opportunity to insert herself into the murder investigation of her sister’s client.

For a short story, there’s a lot of dynamics to the story line. There’s the murder at the center of the story, along with workplace complications, siblings living together and working in similar fields, and family trauma. The audiobook narration by Aoife McMahon was really good.
