The Heron (by Don Winslow)

Master storyteller Don Winslow’s short story, ‘The Heron,’ masterfully blends crime, dark humor, and revenge in his signature gritty style. The story follows a big-city accountant, nicknamed “The Heron” for his long legs and lanky figure, who seemingly leads a quiet life near San Diego. However, his peaceful existence is disrupted when he suspects a hitman may be after him due to his boss’s suspicion of him stealing several million dollars.

Winslow’s exceptional talent lies in creating unique and instantly likable characters. I was immediately captivated by the world of The Heron, his boss, and the hitman. The story unfolds with emotional depth, culminating in a surprising and clever ending that left me pleasantly surprised. I am grateful that this story was included in my Audible membership. Ed Harris’s narration was excellent, and the Audible Original production was spot on.
