The House We Grew Up In (by Lisa Jewell)

This was a very different type of story compared to the other books I’ve read by Lisa Jewell. At first, I wasn’t sure I would like it and I didn’t feel like I understood what was happening. It started off with a young family hunting Easter eggs in their garden and sitting down to a special meal. I’m so very glad I stayed with the story of this family. I soon figured out part of the family’s affliction and then learned the tragedy they experienced. The story moves around quite a bit from the children’s developmental years to their adulthood. I gradually learned more about the mother and her past traumas, too. By the end, I felt like I had taken a deep dive into this family’s life. Lisa Jewell knows how to write about the pain, sorrow, and joys family’s go through. It was an emotional roller coaster and oftentimes had me thinking it was all over for these characters; that they had might as well just give up on each other. I suppose you will just have to read the book for yourself to see what I mean.
