Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words (by Andrew Morton)

This edition of Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words, was originally published in 1992. Author, Andrew Morton, updated and re-published this book 25 years later. The closest we will ever get to a true autobiography of Diana as she secretly collaborated on it’s creation. Diana wanted to maintain complete anonymity with the book as she knew how much conflict would arise with the Royal Family. Andrew Morton revealed her cooperation with the book following her tragic death in 1997.

The book opens with a detailed description of her collaboration. Morton also disclosed the tapes that Diana recorded that helped build the stories in the book. Next, the book dives into stories about Diana’s upbringing and brief early adulthood before she met Prince Charles, presently King Charles. Morton thoroughly covers her engagement to Charles, wedding, children, works of service, relationships with the Royal Family, and the difficulties of her marriage. Diana was very open about her long term struggle with bulimia and suicide attempts. Having always admired Princess Diana, I am familiar with how her significant life events from media reports; however, this book provides a very personal perspective.

I believe this audiobook was published in 2017; therefore, picking up where the original book left off, Morton provided accounts of her divorce from then Prince Charles. The book shares her charitable works of service, sharing custody of her sons, and subsequent relationships. I learned a lot about her too short relationship with Dodi Fayed. Morton covers the tragic car accident that took their lives and reported new-to-me information. The memorial service and minimal efforts by the Royal Family to honor Princess Diana’s life and work were relayed. The book closes with updates of Princes William and Harry. It’s so sad to be reminded of their accomplishments with the military and William’s marriage to Kate Middleton and births of George and Charlotte, at the time of publication, that Diana did not live to be a part. Prince Harry was dating Meghan Markle.

Even after all these years, Princess Diana is remembered as an amazing woman and mother. I loved listening to this audiobook and learning more about her gentle personality. She is an incredibly genuine and caring person. Many people close to her reflected on how selfless her actions were and how much she cared about people. We are so lucky to have had her as a role model. Thankfully, her legacy continues.

The audiobook is well narrated by Michael Maloney and Caroline Langrishe.

Back when my husband and I were collecting Funko POPs, we acquired the two pictured of Princess Diana.
