Hellbent (by Gregg Hurwitz)
I’m thrilled to have read the next installment in the Orphan X series by Gregg Hurwitz. Hellbent was an excellent read!
Evan Smoak, also known as Orphan X, receives a call on the Nowhere Man line. Instead of a random stranger, it’s Jack Johns, the man who raised Evan in the Orphan Program and imparted all his knowledge. Jack is the closest person to a father Evan has ever known. However, secret government forces, working to eliminate everyone associated with the Orphan Program, have discovered Jack. This call is for Jack to give Evan one final assignment: to find and protect Jack’s last recruit from the Orphan Program.
Hellbent, the third installment in the series, diverges from the first two books. It begins with the anticipated assignment, followed by an intense action sequence and a pursuit of the antagonists. However, the story also incorporates an unexpected emotional element. Evan, the enigmatic Nowhere Man, remains the same: he continues to assist those in dire need, indulges in extravagant vodka consumption, and engages in meditation. I particularly enjoyed the introduction of Joey, a smart, rugged, and independent teenager. Observing Evan’s struggle to navigate a relationship with Joey while simultaneously plotting his revenge for his father’s murder truly showcases Evan’s humanity. The inclusion of Joey’s emotions and her likability made me fully invested in the book.
I bought the audiobook of Hellbent using my Audible membership. Scott Brick’s narration is always exceptional, making it an outstanding listen. He remains one of my favorite narrators.
