The Whistler (by John Grisham)

I’ve been a fan of John Grisham since the beginning of his writing career. I vividly remember being in a college classroom and the professor casually talking about Grisham’s first book, The Firm. I was intrigued and immediately purchased the book. I loved it so much I turned my mom and grandma into fans of Grisham too.

Over the years, I’ve gotten behind on reading John Grisham’s books as they are released, but I finally made it to The Whistler! Lacy is a lawyer and investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct that investigates judges. Lacy and her partner, Hugo, are assigned a case involving a judge accused of corruption regarding the development of a casino on Native American land.

The story is juicy and interesting due to the risk involved with investigating. People with money, especially, illegally earned money, will often stop at nothing to avoid losing their cash flow. Personally, I struggled to follow some of the portions of the book that explained the legalities involved. Laws related to corruption and RICO are not my strong suit to comprehend, despite my best efforts. Aside from my personal comprehension struggle, the book was great. Lacy is an admirable character; she’s hardworking, dedicated to her job, and loyal to her friends. She takes a great deal of risk to properly investigate and hold people accountable.

I purchased my signed first edition copy of The Whistler from VJ Books. You’re welcome to check out my author event blog post when I saw John Grisham in conversation with Sue Grafton here.
